Following:
Descriptions Surface mount technology entails attaching the component leads to surface pads on the circuit card with solder. The copper pads are coated to inhibit oxidation. Coatings may be tin, solder, nickel/gold, palladium, or an organic solderability preservative (OSP). Solder paste consisting of a carrier, flux, and solder balls is screened through a metal stencil onto the card pads. Eutectic solder paste is most commonly used. Stencil thickness can vary from 100 to 500 μm depending on the pad pitch. Pad pitch in the range of 250–300 μm typically requires a 100-μm thick stencil. The majority of surface mount applications can be successfully assembled with 150–200 μm stencils. Some manufacturers also screen or dispense adhesives on the card to tack and keep components in place through the reflow process. Components are picked and placed by automated tools that use sophisticated alignment systems to insure that component leads and PCB pads are properly registered. Laser and optical or vision tools are most common, the latter allows component leads to be inspected as well. Assemblies are reflowed in a multizone belt oven at temperatures that range from 210 to 240 °C when using eutectic solder paste. Cleaning may be required depending on the flux type contained in the solder paste and reliability requirements for the system. Electrical test and inspection for defects complete the process
Defective parts, whether a visual or a test fail, may be reworked or repaired. Repair can mean removing a solder bridge between two leads or soldering a lead that was open. Rework is the process of removing a component, cleaning the removal site, preparing the site for a new component, and attaching the new component. This process requires localized heating on the PCB, so that solder joints on neighboring components are not reflowed during removal and attaching Rework is a semiautomated process that is costly. The decision to rework assemblies will depend on their value.

temperature is high enough to melt the solder particles in the solder paste,
bonding the component leads to the pads on the circuit board. The surface
tension of the molten solder helps keep the components in place, and if the
solder pad geometries are correctly designed, surface tension automatically aligns the
components on their pads. There are a number of techniques for reflowing
solder. One is to use infrared lamps; this is called
infrared reflow. Another is to use a hot gas convection. Another technology which is becoming popular
again is special fluorocarbon liquids with high
boiling points which use a method called vapor phase reflow. Due to
environmental concerns, this method was falling out of favor until lead-free
legislation was introduced which requires tighter controls on soldering.
Currently, at the end of 2008, convection soldering is the most popular
reflow technology using either standard air or nitrogen gas. Each method has
its advantages and disadvantages. With infrared reflow, the board designer
must lay the board out so that short components don't fall into the shadows
of tall components. Component location is less restricted if the designer
knows that vapor phase reflow or convection soldering will be used in
